about thecubed

Who is thecubed?

TheCubed is actually a 16 year old living in Northern California, specifically in the area of Gilroy and San Jose.

I love to develop websites, and enjoy a good programming challenge once and a while.

TheCubed started out in 2000 as an experiment in 3dsmax with the most basic shape; a cube. I was new to the whole 3d animation software package, and I started out to animate the cube rolling around when I was asked what I was making; I replied "it's just the cube". After that, it seemed like an interesting name-- it seemed to remind me of my computer, and it seemed pretty easy to say.
I was also just starting out with HTML programming and Photoshop, so I just took a screenshot of my cube in 3dsmax and pasted it into Photoshop with a logo ontop of it.

Okay, I thought, this is kinda interesting... so back to the drawing board it was.

During this time, I was not officially 'working' so to speak, since I'm not technically old enough to work- I would be hired by local people in the area to fix computers, which I still do. Word of my technical expertice spread thanks to many of my friends, and suddenly over the summer, I was overloaded with computers that needed fixing.

So, in an effort to give my 'clients' a website they could refer future 'clients' to, I registered TheCubed.com with Godaddy in 2001. I set up an old Pentium Pro 200MhZ with Windows 2000 as a server from my DSL connection, and used BRS WebWeaver (which is a great program) as the web server software.

As I added new features, and more clients, I felt it was time to change the layout of the site, starting with removing the frames on the page. After a few (3) revisions to the site, I came up with version 5

Version 5 was okay for awhile- but it just lacked 'professionality' (if that is even a word).
So, on to Version 6, which was the first version to include a portfolio for future employers (since I am not finally old enough to intern at some companies). This portfolio still exists on the current version of TheCubed, and will be updated as time permits.

Along with Version 6 came a new server- and a new knowledge of PHP.

This computer, which may just look like an old IBM desktop painted black- is actually a brand new computer inside. When I built my new server, I new that it was going to need some power; so I purchased some new computer hardware.

  • Intel Celeron 2.5GHz CPU
  • ECS P4M800Pro-M Motherboard
  • 2GB Kingston DDR400
  • 250GB SATA HDD (Maxtor unbranded)
  • Windows Server 2003 Web Edition

This hardware may not be that impressive, but it is enough to run this site 24/7 without any problems.
I am planning some projects, as you will see on my blog page, that will require me to purchase two new servers that will run Ubuntu Linux 6.06 with Apache2 for hosting other people's websites.
Check on my blog page for more information about my server expansion.

This brings me to the current stage in TheCubed- Version 7.
Version 7 is actually a mod of a theme by NodeThirtyThree Design , but the HTML and CSS has been 90% redone to fit my needs.
